Why this design works
Evergreen and ivory is the palette that solves the hardest problem in Christmas cake decorating: most Christmas cakes are white on top, and a pale topper on white royal icing loses its shape entirely. The dark wreath gives the design a defined outer edge that reads from across the table, and it prints predictably where a bright post-box red would shift orange on some edible printers.
What to put in the centre
The blank centre is the point of the design. These are three that work, and why:
- “Merry Christmas”
- The safe default. Sits comfortably inside the wreath at any size.
- “The Hales”
- A family name is worth noticeably more to a customer than a generic greeting, and costs you nothing.
- “Christmas 2026”
- For a cake that will be photographed and remembered — dates age better than greetings.
Sizes for this occasion
A yule log is the size people most often get wrong. Size the topper to the width of the log rather than the length, or it dominates the whole thing — 2.5 to 3 inches is usually right.

Cardstock at 250–300gsm for a paper topper on a stick, or an edible icing sheet if it will sit directly on buttercream and be eaten. Edible printing needs a printer dedicated to edible ink — you cannot use one that has had regular ink through it. Print at 100% or "actual size", never "fit to page", which silently shrinks the topper.
Anything to watch when printing this design?
If the cake will be on display from Christmas Eve to New Year, print this on 300gsm card rather than an icing sheet. Edible toppers go brittle and the colours dull over that long.
