Why this design works

Restraint is what makes a wedding topper age well, and this design is built around a lot of empty space rather than a lot of detail. The blush and sage wreath is asymmetric enough to feel hand-painted but symmetrical enough to centre a monogram inside, and it holds up at the small sizes a tiered cake actually needs — the top tier is usually 4 to 6 inches, not 8.

What to put in the centre

The blank centre is the point of the design. These are three that work, and why:

A & J
Initials with a generous gap. Monograms fail when the letters crowd each other.
Mr & Mrs Hale
Set on two lines if the surname is long rather than shrinking the type.
14.06.26
A date alone is the most understated option and photographs beautifully.

Sizes for this occasion

Measure the top tier, not the base. A five inch topper that looks right on an eight inch cake will overhang a four inch top tier completely, and the overhang is the first thing you see in every photograph taken from the side.

Printing it

Replace the initials and add a date as a second text layer. Keep small details away from the edge and choose the size to suit your cake.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size should this weddings topper be?

Topper on a 4" top tier takes 2.5 inches, and topper on a 6" top tier takes 3.5–4 inches. Measure the top tier, not the base. A five inch topper that looks right on an eight inch cake will overhang a four inch top tier completely, and the overhang is the first thing you see in every photograph taken from the side.

What can I personalise?

Change the name, message, lettering colour, size and shape in the editor. The illustration itself has a fixed palette. You can edit before signing in, and a free account includes two watermark-free 300 DPI downloads per UK calendar day.

What do I print it on?

Cardstock at 250–300gsm for a paper topper on a stick, or an edible icing sheet if it will sit directly on buttercream and be eaten. Edible printing needs a printer dedicated to edible ink — you cannot use one that has had regular ink through it. Print at 100% or "actual size", never "fit to page", which silently shrinks the topper.

Anything to watch when printing this design?

Print two copies on 300gsm card. Wedding cakes get transported, and a spare topper in the box has saved more cakes than any other single precaution.
