Cake Wrap Size Calculator
How long and how tall to make an edible wrap (or band) for the side of your cake, allowing for the icing or frosting, and how many icing sheets it prints on.
Cut your wrap
680 mm
68.0 cm · 26.8 in long, 102 mm (4 in) tall
- Round the cake
- 670 mm
- Plus overlap
- 10 mm
Cut to the bare tin, it would come up 31 mm short. The icing adds to the distance round.
Prints as 4 strips on 2 A4 sheets
Overlapping where they join, so the joins hide under piping. Sheets planned for a Canon TS705; most home printers are close.

Cake wrap sizes — chart
For a 4 inch (10 cm) tall cake under 5 mm of icing, with a 10 mm overlap at the back, printed on A4 with no peel tab. The last column is what you'd get measuring the bare tin: the gap the icing leaves.
| Tin (pan) | Cut the wrap | A4 sheets | Bare tin only |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4″ round | 361 mm (14.2 in) | 1 (2 strips) | 329 mm |
| 6″ round | 520 mm (20.5 in) | 2 (2 strips) | 489 mm |
| 7″ round | 600 mm (23.6 in) | 2 (4 strips) | 569 mm |
| 8″ round | 680 mm (26.8 in) | 2 (4 strips) | 648 mm |
| 9″ round | 760 mm (29.9 in) | 2 (4 strips) | 728 mm |
| 10″ round | 839 mm (33 in) | 3 (3 strips) | 808 mm |
| 12″ round | 999 mm (39.3 in) | 3 (6 strips) | 968 mm |
| 6″ square | 651 mm (25.6 in) | 2 (4 strips) | 620 mm |
| 8″ square | 854 mm (33.6 in) | 3 (5 strips) | 823 mm |
| 10″ square | 1,057 mm (41.6 in) | 3 (6 strips) | 1,026 mm |
Then design it at exactly that size
The cake wrap maker uses these same numbers. Drop in your photos or a pattern, spin the cake in 3D to check it all the way round, and print it split onto your sheets with cut lines, labels and a 50 mm line to check nothing was scaled.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should an edible cake wrap be?
As long as the distance round the iced cake, plus about 10 mm to overlap at the back. About 680 mm (26.8 in) long for an 8 inch round tin under 5 mm of icing: 670 mm round the cake plus a 10 mm overlap at the back. At 4 inches tall it prints as 4 strips on 2 A4 sheets.
Why is diameter × 3.14 too short?
Because the wrap goes round the icing, not the tin. 5 mm of buttercream or fondant adds 10 mm to the diameter, which is about 31 mm round the cake: enough to leave a gap at the back. Measure the iced cake with a tape, or let the calculator add your coating.
How do I measure a square cake for a wrap?
Run a tape round it once iced: that includes the rounded corners. From the tin, the calculator takes four sides plus the extra the coating adds round each corner.
How tall should the wrap be?
The height of the iced cake, or less if you want a band with icing showing above and below. A strip a little short of the top hides under a piped border.
How many icing sheets do I need for a cake wrap?
It depends on the length and height. A 4 inch tall wrap fits two strips to an A4 sheet, so most 6 to 9 inch cakes take two sheets. The calculator plans the strips the way our cake wrap maker prints them, turning them on the sheet when that saves one.
What is the peel tab?
Many icing sheets have a plastic strip across one end with no icing on it, to peel the backing away. Ink there smears, so if your sheets have one, choose “Yes” and the strips are kept clear of it.
