Why this design works
A milestone topper is a number topper, so the whole design is arranged around a centre big enough for two digits set large. The balloons sit in two clusters on the upper edge and the laurels low on each side, which keeps a clear vertical band down the middle — a “50” set at full height never touches the artwork. Champagne, blush and sage suit an adult birthday without tipping into a children’s palette.
What to put in the centre
The blank centre is the point of the design. These are three that work, and why:
- “40”
- The number alone, set large. It is the one thing a milestone cake has to say.
- “Fabulous at 50”
- A short phrase with the number in it — keep it to one line at this size.
- “21”
- Add “Key of the door” underneath in a smaller size for the traditional 21st.

What do I print it on?
Cardstock at 250–300gsm for a paper topper on a stick, or an edible icing sheet if it will sit directly on buttercream and be eaten. Edible printing needs a printer dedicated to edible ink — you cannot use one that has had regular ink through it. Print at 100% or "actual size", never "fit to page", which silently shrinks the topper.
Anything to watch when printing this design?
Set the number in the dark bronze of the lettering, not in the gold of the laurels. Gold on ivory is deliberately soft, and a gold number vanishes into it at cupcake size.
