Why this design works
The pitch is in the border, not the middle: a mown-stripe green ring with white stars, which says football before anyone reads a word and leaves a pale centre for the lettering. The ball, bunting and trophy are deliberately neutral — red, gold and navy — so the design suits any team. The team goes in the lettering, in the club’s own colours, with no crest.
What to put in the centre
The blank centre is the point of the design. These are three that work, and why:
- “Theo 7”
- Name and shirt number, like the back of a shirt. The number can be the age.
- “Goal!”
- One word at full size, for cupcakes where the cake carries the name.
- “Player of the match”
- Longer, so use it on the 8 inch cake topper rather than cupcakes.

What do I print it on?
Cardstock at 250–300gsm for a paper topper on a stick, or an edible icing sheet if it will sit directly on buttercream and be eaten. Edible printing needs a printer dedicated to edible ink — you cannot use one that has had regular ink through it. Print at 100% or "actual size", never "fit to page", which silently shrinks the topper.
Anything to watch when printing this design?
The green ring is the heaviest part of the print. Let an edible sheet dry fully before cutting, and cut just inside the outer edge so no white shows round the grass.
