Edible Image Size for Cupcakes

Print 2 inch (51 mm) circles for standard cupcakes — sold in the UK as 50 mm. That sits neatly on a frosted top, which is usually 2 to 2.25 inches across. Go up to 2.5 inches for a smooth, flat-iced dome, or down to 1.5 inches (38 mm) for smaller UK fairy cakes.

Why this size

A standard muffin-tin cup is about 2.75 inches across the top, but once a cupcake is frosted the flat area you can lay an image on is nearer 2 to 2.25 inches. A 2 inch circle fits that with a little frosting showing all round — which is why nearly every supplier pre-cuts it.

In the UK, cupcake cases usually have a 50 to 53 mm base and fairy cake cases about 45 mm, so the 2 inch circle — sold as 50 mm — suits cupcakes and 1.5 inch (38 mm) suits fairy cakes.

How to put an edible image on cupcakes

  1. 1

    Give it a flat top

An image needs a smooth surface. Spread a flat layer of buttercream, or sit a sugarpaste (fondant) disc on top — pipe a border afterwards if you like.
  2. 2

    Choose when to apply

Some suppliers lay the image on fresh buttercream so it grips straight away; others wait until the icing has crusted, which smudges less. Either works — fresh grips better, crusted is tidier.
  3. 3

Lay it on from one edge

Peel the circle off its backing and lower it from one side to the other so no air gets trapped.
  4. 4

    Leave it to settle

Smooth lightly and leave it — moisture from the buttercream softens the sheet so it settles into the icing on its own.

Tips that save a sheet

  • A piped swirl is not flat. Stick the image to a sugarpaste disc first, then sit the disc on the swirl.
  • Measure the frosted top, not the case — frosting changes the space you have.
  • A cake image and cupcake circles can share one sheet: the editor packs mixed sizes onto the same page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size are cupcake toppers?

2 inches (51 mm, sold in the UK as 50 mm) for regular cupcakes. Mini cupcakes take 1.25 to 1.5 inches and jumbo cupcakes 2.5 to 3 inches.

Is a fairy cake the same as a cupcake?

Not quite. UK fairy cakes are smaller — cases around 45 mm across the base against 50 to 53 mm for cupcakes — so they suit a 1.5 inch (38 mm) image.

How many cupcake toppers fit on a sheet?

With a 6 mm cutting gap: at 2 inches, 15 per A4 sheet and 12 per US Letter sheet; at 2.5 inches, 8 per A4 sheet and 9 per US Letter sheet.
